Why customized authentication?

I am trying to integrate this forum as part of another web2py application and have been looking the possibility of doing a single sign on mechanism for the service. I have understood that others users of pyForum have similar interests, either via plugin or by other means like CAS, which looks most promising to me.

So the main question, why is the authentication customized in the way it is in PyForum? The web2py auth module and database offers exactly the same functionality! So if that would be directly used then using such things as CAS would be really simple, whereas now it is impossible :(

I am trying to replace the CustomAuthentication with the normal Auth and databases, but to me it looks like a lot of work..
